In Memoriam
Daniel Hettiaratchi (1930 – 2026) Daniel Hettiaratchi was a pioneer in the understanding of soil mechanics in Agriculture. Through rigorous analysis and exceptional attention to detail, he had a rare ability to make complex ideas understandable without ever oversimplifying them. As a lecturer, he inspired hundreds of students, not only through the depth of his knowledge, but through his commitment to precision, fairness, and intellectual honesty. His influence will be felt for many years in the people he taught and the standards he set.John Goodfellow (1944 – 2016) John had always looked forward to welcoming members of the Otterburn Society to his Tower Hotel. He considered the Tower to be the “spiritual home” of the Otterburn Society. John regrettably died early, but, as he might have eventually wanted, at the wheel of his tractor. Dave “Bexley Heath” Smith (1961 – 2014) Dave had fond memories of Otterburn, particularly the time he enjoyed an extended hike in the snow prior to an Otterburn as an undergraduate. Dave is fondly remembered by members of the society for his excellent taste in ties. Dr Alan Reece (1927 – 2012) The lecturer of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne who initiated the Otterburn Conferences and inspired the founding of the Otterburn Society. Alan greatly enjoyed the Cheviot Hills and introduced literally hundreds of his students to walking in that wonderful environment.
